About the Museum

The municipal Museum of Zelezny Brod was established in the second half of the 19th century. The objective was to preserve and protect historical memorabilia depicting the town, its culture, and current lifestyle. The mission of the museum has remained unchanged since the past years, it widened its effect on the region of Zelezny Brod. It is interested mainly in the documentation of history and the contemporary stressing local specifics – glass manufacture.

The Glass exposition
The Glass exposition is located in the building of the former Town Saving Bank of 1936. The exposition pertains to the history of glass manufacture in Zelezny Brod since last half of the 19th century to the present. It shows examples of domestic workings of raw glass – manufacture of pressed beads and wound pearls, grinding and stringing of pearls. Other parts of the exposition present the activities of the local School of Glass, the first such school grounded here in 1920. The teachers and graduates of the school were the creators of the artistic spirit of the Zelezny Brod style of glass. Their outstanding works of 1920 to 1980 have become the main part of the exposition. Among the exhibited items are the glass figurines by Prof. Jaroslav Brychta, the symbols of Zelezny Brod. The current glass creativity and the unique technique of glass sculpturing, a method invented here, is represented by the collection of works of world renowned artists, Ms. Jaroslava Brychtová  and Mr. Stanislav Libenský.

The Ethnographic exposition
This exposition has been housed in one of the most beautiful buildings of the reservation called Trávníky.  The house is called Běliště and should represent the folk architecture of the 19th century along the river Jizera. It was erected in 1807 and used to house tannery workshops. The exposition covers housing, clothing, utensils, and tools used after 1850. The beloved instrument of the museum is an ancient organ programming nine melodies, often played in the Běliště house.
